How to do a Yahoo chat:

First you have to have a Yahoo account:
These are free. Go to http://mail.yahoo.com and get an account. Once you have created an account, you then need to add all your friends. We can then do a conference chat. We can even have sound/voice if you have computer headphones and talk to each other. Get an account and email your new yahoo address to me. I'll add you and send it out to everyone. You need Yahoo Messenger. Download it at:
http://messenger.yahoo.com/
Click on Add (see the person's head?) then add the yahoo id - first part of their email: for example: compunerd@yahoo.com would be compunerd
NOW! See Yahoo Facilitator Role below.

Note: Yahoo isn't the only free chat service. MSN and others are also free and equally useful though these instructions may not cross all platforms.

Yahoo Facilitator: is 1 Person per conference (ie, a job for 1 person each time you meet simultaneously online = synchronous chat will act as facilitator. This means You, the facilitator, must be the only person to invite others into the conference - otherwise you'll have several conferences going, when you really need everyone in one room/space. So what does the facilitator do?
Everyone who is on your team should be appearing as logged into Yahoo messenger (ie, their smiley face is lit up). You need to go to the top bar, select tools, select invite to conference. It will open a dialog box which lists everyone currently logged on in a column on the left. Just highlight the ones you want included (probably everyone) and click the Add>> button and it will move their names (Yahoo IDs) over to the right. When all the correct names are on the right, click the INVITE button at bottom. (Note: you may enable voice messaging or talking by leaving the left bottom button clicked. If you don't have headphones w/ microphones you cannot do this. If you forget to turn it off - no biggie deal - it will simply remain inactive.)
Keeping a Record of your discussion. (This only works w/ text chat.)
Once logged into messenger, each person who wants a copy of the discussion, needs to go to the top of the messenger log in box, select Preferences, and then archiving. Click on the top check box which says, Enable Archiving.
WARNING: Please pay attention to the Yahoo IDs of your group. Be aware that Yahoo is just like any other chat room. You can easily wander into rooms where the vocabulary doesn't revolve around education. That's ok, if that's what you want, but if you want to talk to your group don't go clicking on other chat rooms. Yours will be private unless you actively choose to make it otherwise. :) Easy Breezy! Happy Chatting! Jo :)
